You work hard.  You finally get the money to get the bike you want and someone comes along and decides that they want what you worked so hard for.  Thiefs don't care about you.  All they want is what you have, and that bike of yours is a quick trip to the pawn shop or sell from the back of a truck.

Here's a scary bit of information:  In 2004, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported an estimated 6,947,685 "larceny/thefts" of which bicycle thefts accounted for 3.6 percent, or more than 250,000. The average value of a stolen bike was estimated at $240, which represents a total estimated loss due to bicycle thefts of more than $60 million. However, the National Bike Registry estimates that 1.5 million bicycles are stolen each year; the vast majority going unreported.

Now compare the loss of your best transportation to the information above.  A device to lock a bike is well worth the money spent.  Every time you leave your bike unattended, whether it is in a bike rack or on a bike hitch on the back of your car, it must be locked and locked up tight.

You ask how to lock your bike?  With a bike lock naturally.  Bike locking is the best way to prevent someone from being over wanting of your property.  I know of no better way, other than sleeping with my bike, to keep it safe than with a bike lock.

There are several methods of bike locks.  You have your cable method, chain method and the U lock.  They all work for the same purpose, but you have to pick which one is best for you.

There are several different brands on the market, but you yourself have to pick the very best one for you.  Some people like the combination lock and chain, while others prefer the padlock with key.  Some bike locks have a key lock attached to their cable.

No matter what method you choose, you need to pick at least one.  I know of a man who has 4 different locks on his bike.  I thought this to be a little over kill till I asked him why so many.  His answer was very sound.  He said that the reason he used 4 bike locks was "time".  He told me that the more time a thief takes to steal his bike out in public, the better the chance of someone seeing him and getting caught.  It takes longer to steal!

I thought that was such a great idea, I went out and purchased a combination chain bike lock and to pad chain bike locks to put on my bicycle.  I like my transportation.  I paid enough for it, so I want to keep.

The old saying still holds true today...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Get a bike lock today!
